BAMIT'S VISION FOR PI DAY

Check out this great video from Pi Day 2025 at the Dearborn STEM Academy!

What is the BAMIT K12 STEM Pi Day Initiative?

The BAMIT K12 STEM Pi Day Initiative supports schools and educators in sparking interest in STEM and the joy of discovery-based learning, especially among students underrepresented in STEM. Partner schools celebrate with engaging, grade-level activities that help students see themselves as STEM scholars, including:

  • STEM competitions (e.g., mousetrap car races in the gym or other open spaces) to showcase the fun side of STEM.
  • Digits-of-Pi challenges that introduce π as an irrational, non-repeating number in a fun way. These challenges build memory skills, confidence, and peer-to-peer motivation as students push to memorize more digits.
  • Non-competitive, hands-on lessons about circles and their components.

Events take place on Pi Day (March 14) or in the days leading up to it, giving teachers and students age-appropriate ways to explore the mathematics of π and opportunities for students to earn prizes through participation and achievement.

WHAT WE OFFER TO YOU

  • The Curriculum/Activities that can be utilized at no charge to you.
  • Pi Day Memorization Challenge Competition details and prizes for your students.  This includes the sheets, rules and expectations for the competition.
  • Up to $500 to be reimbursed for expenses for the Pi Day Initiative, including purchasing kits and materials for STEM activities, gift cards as prizes for students, and expenses for celebratory events such as pizza parties.
  • Volunteers from MIT to help with activities or share with students on Pi Day (if schedules and school protocol allow).
  • What would Pi Day be without pies to enjoy with your students! In the past, we have had pies donated by Table Talk.

HOW CAN YOU PARTICIPATE

  • Register your school to participate.  A representative will contact you to discuss the initiative/partnership in more detail.
  • Plan out your involvement in Pi Day via Math/Science departments or leaders. Having a dedicated coordinator for Pi Day has proven indispensable to every school that has participated so far.
  • Download our resources to help you run your program.
  • Video/take pictures of your activities and share with the BAMIT K12 STEM Committee to help us brag about how awesome your students did this year.
  • Submit a final report summarizing activities and student participation, along with receipts for reimbursement.

We did the Pi Day celebration with our middle school students (grades 7 and 8). The kids loved it - we had stations in the room with different Pi Day activities and we had a digit memorization contest. At the end of each class period, we passed out the Table Top pies and had a little celebration.
